There are 16 service areas located along the Autostrade Alto Adriatico network, spaced approximately 22 kilometres apart.

Since 2018, these areas have been undergoing major refurbishment works following the new concessions for the management of fuel facilities, catering services and auxiliary services.

Services

The service areas are equipped with rest facilities, convenience services, fuel stations and other amenities.

Play areas for children and pet parks are currently available at the Gonars Nord, Fratta Nord, Fratta Sud and Calstorta Sud service areas.

Since 2019, the installation of electric vehicle charging stations has been underway. They are currently in operation at the Fratta Sud and Gonars Sud service areas in the direction of Trieste, and at Duino Nord, Gonars Nord, Fratta Nord and Bazzera Nord in the direction of Venice, as well as at the Gruaro Est, Gruaro Ovest, Porcia Nord and Brugnera Sud service areas on the A28 Portogruaro–Conegliano, and at the Zugliano Est and Zugliano Ovest service areas on the A23 Palmanova–Tarvisio.

Update of services provided

Fuel prices

Along the managed motorway network, there are four fuel-price display boards (“benzacartelloni”) showing self-service fuel prices: two located on the A4, the first between Sistiana and the Monfalcone Est exit (A4 km 520+350) in the direction of Venice, and the second in the direction of Trieste between San Donà di Piave and the Cessalto exit (A4 km 425+300); a third is located on the A23 near the S. Caterina parking area in the direction of Palmanova (A23 km 17+460); and the last one is on the A28 near Cordignano at km 36+020 in the direction of Portogruaro.

Fuel prices are updated directly by the operators of the service areas whenever changes occur, and under current regulations Autostrade Alto Adriatico is not responsible for such updates.

Awarding procedures

All current sub-concession contracts for the service areas were signed between late 2017 and early 2018, following competitive procedures launched in previous years in compliance with Legislative Decree No. 163 of 12 April 2006.

Additionally, as a result of Article 2, paragraph 2, of Decree-Law No. 121 of 10 September 2021, converted into Law No. 156 of 9 November 2021, which extended existing concessions by two years, the next sub-concession contracts will therefore be signed, for the first expiring contracts, only at the end of 2028.

Quality indicators

The current sub-concession contracts for the service areas were all signed by 2018. The existing sub-concession agreements include numerous quality indicators relating to the services provided, which Autostrade Alto Adriatico constantly monitors using its own internal resources.

Specifically, the inspection and monitoring activities carried out by the Company concern both the verification of the services provided daily to motorway users and the verification of the obligations imposed on the sub-concessionaires under the so-called Maintenance and Cleaning Plan. This document, annexed to the contract, sets out the execution of specific maintenance tasks according to a minimum frequency established for each activity, with the aim of continuously ensuring adequate levels of cleanliness and functionality of the areas and facilities.
In this context, the main inspection and monitoring activities include: cleaning of premises and equipment used for commercial services, cleaning of forecourts, maintenance of hydraulic regulation structures, landscaping and vegetation maintenance, maintenance of internal road-traffic support elements, and maintenance of installations and equipment.

Particular attention is devoted to verifying the ordinary services offered daily to users—namely catering services and fuel supply services—which is carried out in accordance with a specific internal procedure, included within the Company’s integrated management system certified under ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 39001 and ISO 45001. This procedure, entitled “Service Area Monitoring”, has the specific objective of “verifying the quality levels of the services provided by the sub-concessionaire as defined in the Maintenance and Cleaning Plans”.

In 2024, a total of 704 inspection visits were carried out, including 96 night-time inspections, with an average of 44 inspections per service area. During these visits, 283 non-conformities were identified—most of which were of limited significance—and all were resolved within a short timeframe. The inspection process concludes with notification to the sub-concessionaire of any discrepancies identified and with the subsequent verification of the effectiveness of the required corrective and restoration actions.

Finally, it should be noted that each year the Granting Authority — the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport — monitors all motorway concessionaires on two specific quality indicators for service areas: one relating to service comfort, and the other to services provided for travellers with disabilities. In both cases, motorway concessionaires are required to report the number of inspections carried out each month on at least 80% of the service areas, with a minimum of two inspections and at least one monthly inspection on 100% of the areas. Autostrade Alto Adriatico has consistently achieved the targets established by the Granting Authority.

Service monitoring

The Company applies a contractually mandated system for monitoring and controlling prices through both random and periodic checks, carried out by its own personnel or by third parties specifically appointed for this purpose, including without prior notice. These checks concern both the progress of operations and the prices applied.

The sub-concession contract, in a dedicated article entitled “Price Regulations”, stipulates that the prices applied within the service areas must be aligned with those commonly charged by the corresponding commercial sector for the relevant type of business within the geographical area where the service area is located. It also provides, among other provisions, that upon request — or at least on a monthly basis — the sub-concessionaire must send the Company the price list of the twenty best-selling products over the previous 30 days.

With regard to fuel prices, service-station operators are required to report them in real time on the Ministry of Economic Development’s “Osservaprezzi Carburanti” website. Checks carried out by the Company’s personnel have confirmed that prices have always been displayed correctly (clearly visible to users) and that price information is regularly communicated to the Company by the sub-concessionaires.
